Batten O sing joyfully or YouTube SATB
Batten (1591-1637) was a singingman at Westminster Abbey and later organist and choirmaster at St Paul's Cathedral. This is his best-known piece.

Cavendish Come, gentle swains or YouTube Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SSATB
A delightful piece from the Triumphs of Oriana - the gentle music perfectly depicting the graceful text.

Passereau Il est bel et bon or YouTube SATB
This onamatopoeic French piece, evocative of two chattering farmwives, is great fun to sing. Passereau was a French Renaissance composer of rustic chansons. Listen out for the clucking chickens!

Bennet Weep, O mine eyes or YouTube Also in the Oxford Book of English Madrigals SATB
The poignant Weep, O mine eyes was written as a tribute to John Dowland, using part of Dowland's celebrated Flow my tears.

Wilbye Change me, O heavens or YouTube SATB
Change me, O heavens, from the composer's Second Set of Madrigals of 1598, is mature in style and full of characteristic tonal ambiguities. Despite the key signature it starts very much in C/G major, and there are some luscious chromatics around the words 'to make my moan'.

Weelkes On the plains fairy trains or YouTube SSATB
A lovely, lively depiction of Arcadian revelry to finish the evening.
